This is our first single of 2024!
We’ve got a big plan for 20; we’re on track to release ten songs throughout the year! And it all starts with this single: “Someday”.
“Someday” is a song about realizing we are going to die. And it is that realization and that fact that should make us take action and try to do the things that we are passionate about and that make us feel alive.
So, let’s start with the lyrics:
Lyrics
I woke up and realize I’m wasted still
This is not where I’m supposed to be
And every time I’m awake, I wish I were asleep
Go to work
And waste away 8 hrs a day
Pick up my guitar, and it’s 2 am
And every time I’m asleep, I wish I were awake
On and on
There’s just something going wrong
And I just... cannot help gotta fight the feeling
Something’s strange, and I feel it creep in
And it’s so hard to do all the things I want
Cuz I get stuck behind new ideas
And every time I postpone, I only feel regret
On and on
There’s just something going wrong
And I just... cannot help gotta fight the feeling
Something’s strange, and I feel it creep in
Someday
It’ll all be over
Someday
Time won’t mean a thing
Someday
Your heart will stop beating
But this Sunday is way too soon
I woke up today, and 10yrs have passed
I’m no longer in my twenties, yeah
And so I don’t regret, I try to do it all
On and on
There’s just something going wrong
And I just... cannot help gotta fight the feeling
Something’s strange, and I feel it creep in
Someday
It’ll all be over
Someday
Time won’t mean a thing
Someday
Your heart will stop beating
But this Sunday is way too soon
Never thought it was enough...
Someday
It’ll all be over
Someday
Time won’t mean a thing
Someday
Your heart will stop beating
But this Sunday is way too soon
Inspiration: The words
Lyrically, the primary source of inspiration was this project, this band. I spent a lot of time thinking about making music, releasing music, and playing live... but I just hadn’t done it. And while the band and the music were the primary source of inspiration, there are so many things I want to do... And it’s a lot of stuff! From learning more about my job to more about music theory, drums, and sim racing, there’s so much to do!
That's why the chorus says, "Someday, it'll all be over... time won't mean a thing... your heart will stop beating..." This is what will happen someday... we'll die... but I don't want to die! I'm sure neither do you! So I end the chorus with, "But this Sunday's way too soon." I'm saying I want that time to mean something... I'm pushing past the fear of putting myself out there to do the things I want to do... so that, in the end, I won't regret it. Not one bit of it.
Maybe this whole band music thing takes off... and maybe it doesn't. Either way is ok with me! Because I'm trying my best, and I'm doing it. I, too, have a 9-5 job. It helps that I do like this job! Nevertheless, I spend some time working and exchanging my time for money that I would otherwise put into doing more music. But I'm doing what I want to do, which is this music thing.
Inspiration: The image
I had this idea for the music video that it'd be someone who didn't know what they wanted to do with their lives, and throughout the music video, this person would be out having a blast doing some very fun things. And so, I thought that it'd be funnier if we had the main character be these tube man things that would flop in the air at car dealerships and whatnot.
The idea was that the tube man was sick and tired of flopping around and helping sell cars. Instead, our guy wanted to do music, eat ice cream, or learn to play ping-pong and walk dogs. He just wanted the world to let him cook!
So I found a costume, and after some iterations later, this is what we got!
Inspiration: The music
The melody was something that came to me while I was walking my dog, Chia. It was on May of 2022! Time flies! And so I had what would be the chorus, "Some-daaaaay". This is the audio of me logging that first idea onto my phone's voice memo app:
Nothing fancy. But that was the initial idea.
Unfortunately, I don't have any demos of the riff, but the idea for the riff was to be an idea that grew and grew until it erupted into the verse. The verse itself was very much inspired by Bloc Party's "Little Thoughts."
There was a "2005-indie" first idea of a vibe for the verse, but after adding all of the guitars, the song got much louder!
The pre-chorus has that dance beat I do like to use quite a bit. It's the same chord progression over and over, but the dance beat and the vocals open up the sound. What I thought was very clever was to go back to the intro after the first pre-chorus! It made sense to jump onto the chorus; it was the natural and obvious decision, but I guess I didn't want to give you, the listener, that satisfaction! I wanted to give a sense of familiarity throughout the song but not have the same typical song structure one might expect.
We did have the problem of playing the intro too many times at one point! We would play it after each section! That was a bit of a pickle we had to get ourselves out of and choose how many times we were really going to play that intro. I think we came up with a rather good solution, and the intro riff gets played three times, two fairly early into the song and one last time until the end. I liked that decision because that's how we also end the song!
I struggled to write a drum part for the bridge. I had an idea of doing something like a Travis Barker bridge in the song "Dogs Eating Dogs..."
...and after doing several back-and-forths with my drum teacher, we came up with what you hear in the song! It's a quick high-hat double with a crash and slash to open up the sound. Nothing as complex as the original inspiration, but I liked it very much! The chord progression used in the chorus is the same in the bridge, and we then go out of the bridge onto the final double chorus with a gnarly snare roll.
And that's pretty much it!
Recording process
We're sticking to a "home studio" process. We recorded drums with an electronic drumset that I played and then, through some Drum libraries, found the right sound for the song.
The bass was recorded by our Chuch, our bass man. Luis and Jordi recorded guitars.
The vocals were fun because we set up some sheets in the room and sang in them. It got stuffy, but it helped isolate the sound better. And Gisse, our business manager, marketing consultant, and operations manager, also sang vocals in the chorus and bridge.
It wasn't until many months later that we sent the song to mix and master, and now a couple of months later you hear what you're listening to now!
Now what?
Now we get to celebrate a bit!
We're very pleased with the result; this is the first song we release as a full band. We will apply the learnings from this production to the next song! Which will hopefully come out in February of 2024.
